frequently asked questions

While bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, it is highly manageable. With a properly tailored treatment plan, individuals can maintain long-term mood stability and lead fulfilling, productive lives.

Bipolar I Disorder: Defined by at least one full manic episode. Major depressive and hypomanic episodes are also common.

Bipolar II Disorder: Characterized by at least one major depressive episode and at least one hypomanic episode, without manic episodes.

Cyclothymic Disorder: Involves frequent periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms lasting over at least two years that do not meet full episode criteria.

Not all mood stabilizers or atypical antipsychotics cause weight gain. There are modern weight-neutral medication choices. If an effective medication does carry a risk of weight changes, Dr. Gelber will work actively with you to manage and mitigate it.
